About Position

Research Engineer oversees the technical aspects of the research carried out in the area of Earthquake Engineering Research in the Department of Civil Engineering with particular responsibility for managing to develop and facilitate research activities in the field, especially in the area of infrastructure monitoring.

The role requires comprehensive and in-depth knowledge in the area of structures and testing of structures under dynamic loading simulation conditions.

Job Description

Project management and task coordination. Duties include

A. Acting as the point of contact for researchers, customers, and teams at other universities in the creation of research projects to be carried out in the field.

B. Managing, editing, and overseeing the generation of research reports and other deliverables to customers or funding institutions.

C. Developing test protocols and plans for research projects carried out in the field.

D. Interacting with external clients, formulating project proposals, and proposing test configurations, data acquisition requirements, and test protocols.

E. Working closely with the Director of Laboratories to communicate the intended research work so that Director can coordinate the work of the Laboratories Support Group.

G. Participating in the planning and organization of local and international workshops and seminars organized by the EERF.

2. Research work. Duties include

A. Conducting direct research work, including developing and executing research based on sound experimental design techniques, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.

B. Assisting in developing new test protocols based on new test results.

C. Assisting with the preparation of grant applications for equipment procurement in coordination with the Director of the EERF and the Director of Laboratories.

D. Developing new test methodologies and conducting scientific work;

E. Writing technical reports and proposals for contract research projects;

F. Overseeing the writing of technical reports by students;

G. Being involved in experimental field work related to instrumentation and monitoring of existing structures.

3. Participation in the Department s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Committee.

Qualifications/Experience

A. The minimum qualification is an Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science.

B. Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

C. The most preferred qualification is a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering and holding (or being eligible for) Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.

D. Must have familiarity with presentation techniques (Word, Powerpoint).

E. Be able to modify and update Laboratory information on the Web.
